Just a little message from the Philippines to let you know I'm still alive, many people worried about my safety here in the Philippines after Yolanda left a trail of destruction in the east of the Philippines. In Manila we barely noticed anything from the super Typhoon. Young Focus is setting up some projects in Iloilo to aid the victims of the Typhoon.
Hopefully more updates soon.
Its been a long time since I updated with s
The summervacation has come nearly to an end, the children that Young Focus sponsors/supports are being provided with new materials, clothing and shoes. This is a big task to run smoothly, let alone to make sure that the items are delivered on time. Together with Manuel we had a round trip through Manila collecting all the materials needed. This is a huge undertaking. The agreements made with certain suppliers, are not always as punctual as we are used to in the Netherlands. After a whole day "shopping" we collected all the stuff.
Last Friday we went to bring the materials to the kids in Bulacan. Bulacan is 3 hours away from Manila. The government moved hundreds of families from and a round Smokey Mountain 2 to Bulacan, due a restructuring plan from the government. This with the intention to make life better for them, however, there is at this moment in Bulacan little work for them available. Many complain about lack of money for their daily meal. Some families even decided to return to Smokey Mountain. The hope for employment, for all these families in Bulacan is the highest priority. The government has offered them a home that they can live free of charge for the first year, after that year the monthly rent will be 200 pesos (converted 4 euros), which is very cheap.
On arrival we were greeted and the town welcomed us. After the handing out the school material, it began to rain, which was our moment of turning back to to Manila.
This week we will be handing out the materials in Manila to the students who live in Manila.
Summer holidays in the Philippines for schools are from April to May. During the summer holidays Young Focus organizes several activities, including the activity of last Friday. 9 groups had to choose a country to make a short presentation. They transformed there presentation into a beautiful dancing event. All groups had to do research about the country of their choice. After much practice and many adjustments the children created a fantastic afternoon. With enormous creativity they made outfits and decor with a budget of 800 pesos (15 euros), to enhance their presentation. Paez Highschool provided us a beautiful location for this event. In the early afternoon we prepared the event. Parents of the children were invited to come witness this beautiful event. Cuba, Costa Rica, Egypt, Turkey, Netherlands, New Zealand, Fiji, Hungary and Madagascar were represented. After much deliberation the jury came to its conclusion first place went to Cuba, Netherlands got a 2nd and 3rd place went to Fiji.
Thank you all for this great day, especially Joan!
This morning we went to Smokey mountain, to visit the Family/Childcare Plus building of Young Focus. This building had to be cleaned due some renovations and new purpose of the building. So together with Ann, Ivan, Vanessa, Suping and some others we cleaned the building after that, back to the office of Young Focus.
Finally the moment is there, today its my first working day at Young Focus in Tondo Manila.
Soon more updates!
